Sheet and plate steel generally comes in 2400mm x 1200mm size sheets, often flattened then cut from larger coils.
Sheet is thinner than plate at up to 5mm in thickness; and plate is 5mm and thicker. Cold and hot rolled both refer to the process in which it the sheets are made; the steel is rolled thinner until it is at the desired thickness.
There are also a number of different finishes or coatings that can be applied such as zinc, zinc-iron alloy, and aluminium and zinc, (some of which can come in different colours) the coating being dependant on the use and environment for the steel.
Chequered or floor is another type of plate and this has a slightly elevated diamond shaped or ‘tread’ pattern on one side of the sheet.
